Wishlist / Grouping similar songs.
« on: November 13, 2009, 18:42:15 »
I wish ....
Similarity had a way to sort the Results pane in such a way that song pairs which are also similar between themselves are grouped together like this:
---
Silver.Chances(RadioEdit)      ---  <similar to something>
Silver.Chances(Single)           ---  <similar to something>
Track1.Chances(Extended)     ---  <similar to something>
---
SwanLake.StPertersburg        ---  <similar to something>
Hamburg2004_SwanLake       ---  <similar to something>
Czajkowki.Track7of10            ---  <similar to something>
---
etc etc

This way I can tell how many 'duplicate'/'similar' versions of the same song there really are on my disk.

Wishlist / editing MP3 tags
« on: October 30, 2009, 06:50:58 »
I was under the impression that you were going to add an  "EDIT TAGS" option to the   Play,Browse,Delete,...  context-menu in the Result Tab,
because the way the existing Tag Editor works it is basically  unusable / useless.
hmmmmmmm

I would be even happy, if you just turned the    "artist","title","album",... labels in the file info pane at the results bottom  into   buttons  (with same text).
That way when we click the given button the tag in question would swap places between the two files.

Lets face it   ... most of the time we just want to steal the better tags, to go with the file we like more.   (no editor would be needed at all then)

Bugs / ignores.list let me down!
« on: October 26, 2009, 19:49:38 »
I was processing my list of duplicates for about the last 10days now,  and  I have marked i don't know how many files as ignores  (for sure more then 200).
Yesterday the power went out in the house.
Today I started running the analysis again  and   to my horror, when I checked the     ignores.list    file   it did NOT contain any of the files I marked to ignore in the last 2weeks, so all that work is lost ?
That is horrible !
Why did the software not commit the ignores to the      ignores.list     file as soon as I ignored something ???

Bugs / Runtime Error
« on: August 01, 2009, 01:45:22 »
Running  v0.9(320)
on Vista Bussiness x64

After a few minutes of running comparisons, I get  several GPF boxes poping up with same text (this happens consistently now):

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program C:\Program Files(x86)\Similarity\Similarity.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Obviously there was no proper error handling somewhere,  and there is no good indication where in the code the problem occured.
Is there some log files or anything that can be looked at?

Wishlist / Ignore Files (switch to MD5)
« on: July 03, 2009, 03:33:17 »
This may sound a little radical at first.   But  here is an idea that would help when running the software on multiple machines.
Instead of storing absolute path and filenames  in the ignore file,
store the MD5 fingerprint (and perhaps the short filename) of each song in the pair.
This way we can copy the ignore file between computers and pairs which were marked as ignored on one will automatically be ignored on the other computer.

I know this is a bit more sophisticated, but in a multi computer (not on a LAN, but physically separate locales) environment makes a lot of sense.

Please consider it.

Wishlist / Ignore marked ...
« on: July 02, 2009, 20:55:47 »
I can't remember if I posted this wish item yet or not, but here it is:

Could you add the equivalent of "Delete marked ..."  for  ignores :   ie. "Ignore marked ..."?

Gosh that would save me such a headache,  its a pain when you have many versions of same/similar songs. (happens a lot with classical music  for ex)

thnx

Bugs / Caching problem
« on: June 12, 2009, 22:38:16 »
v0.9.300   on Win2000

I think there is something severely wrong with the caching mechanism.
Or i  misunderstand how it is supposed to work.

After scanning a good portion of my collection,  the cache is at about 13000 entries.
I marked many of them .... perhaps about 300 as Ignores.
The rest I deleted either left or right.
I closed Similarity.

Now I just started Similarity again,   and start the scan without adding any new folders to the list.
And the  Cache size reads:   94

What is going on ?

What is worse, all the filepairs which I marked to Ignore are now showing up again, as this scan progresses.

Please  help !   This is nightmarish.    :(
I have 18000 more files to go ....  and if ignore does not work, I may have to find a tall building.   :(

Bugs / Status bar
« on: June 12, 2009, 22:26:20 »
v0.9.300
Cosmetic bug.

The status bar proclaims :  1 duplicate(s)
after I deleted the last duplicate pair from the Results list.
But the  Results   tab   is showing correctly Zero duplicate count (ie. nothing).

Bugs / Ignore very slow
« on: June 12, 2009, 22:15:34 »
v0.9.300

Sometimes (on average 1 in 3 invocations)  the Ignore is real slow on my machine (Quad3GHz  with Vista and 8G Ram), when you try to Ignore while it is still scanning for duplicates.
(it can take at times upto 18 seconds for the Ignored row to disappear)

Wishlist / LeftRight vs. TopBottom Layout selector
« on: May 21, 2009, 18:10:53 »
One more tiny little suggestion ..... this one should be super quick to implement, since it is just a visual re-arrangement of already existing elements.

The way the bottom pane is arranged is what i think they call:   Left to Right
If at all possible can there be a switch so that the user selects if he wants to see that info pane in Left to Right   or    Top to Bottom    layout.

What is meant by that;

Left to Right
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx....Artist....yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx....Title.....yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.....File.....yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Top to Bottom
Artist......xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
.............yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Title.......xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
............ yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
File........xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
.............yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Reasoning:   When dealing with a very large collection, and going through hundreds of duplicates  it  becomes very tiring very quickly  to  visually jump Left<->Right  .....  this is particularly true when comparing long filename strings.

Hope very much  you can add that in the subsequent versions.

thnx

Wishlist / Font Size - UserAdjustable
« on: May 21, 2009, 17:58:17 »
Is there any way possible that you can make the Font Size, user selectable ?

The current font size, is what I consider Medium, and most of my full filenames get cut off (even at 1900x1200).

If I had a choice I would make the font of both the grid and the song detail display pane on the bottom  at least 2points smaller  (but I realize that other people have different visual prefferences).

See if that is something that can be implemented without huge effort.

Very appreciative.

General / Question: What happens when file is moved ?
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:33:28 »
Let us consider this scenario:
After Similarity finishes 1st scan of the entire library we get this duplicate pair
  C:\folderA\song1.mp3
  C:\folderB\song2.mp3

it turns out that  song2.mp3  was really supposed to be in  C:\folderA
so i move it there with WinExplorer.

What happens when I run Similarity again (without clearing the cache) ?

Will Similarity remove C:\folderB\song2.mp3 from cache ?  and insert  C:\folderA\song2.mp3 ?

Bugs / Cache not updated on file Delete.
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:22:27 »
When I delete a file (within Similarity) while the program is still scanning the library, that file shows up in subsequent comparisons.  Meanwhile it should also be erased from the cache, so it does not show up as a duplicate ever again.
This became very evident with one of these files that compares at 100% with many many other files  (i think as pointed out by someone else ,  it is those files that Similarity is unable to decode properly,   ie. they do not play in WMP) ... the file just kept showing up again and again,  after I did Right-Side-Delete of it  several times (with Retry after the first time in Vista).

Bugs / Completely different MP3s match up.
« on: May 11, 2009, 15:42:17 »
I sort of alluded to this in an earlier post somewhere.
But what I get happening  (and I think I also did see someone mention it before at some point),   when Similarity finishes all the scanning - there are some MP3 songs that match (incorrectly) many many other songs.
It is not clear why this happens,  so perhaps best if I send you an example pair - and you can let me know what is going on,  and what is so special about them that they match in the software ,  but to the human ear they could not be any more different.
Will send mail with MP3s to: support AT music<antiSpamChop>

Bugs / ID3 tags titles missing
« on: May 08, 2009, 21:27:41 »
v0.8

There is now only a black box separating (it seems) the two ID3 infos of the Left and Right file ....   it used to tell you what line the Title, Artist, Album, etc  is   in the older versions.

Was this taken out on purpose  or   by accident ?
(it was useful)
